Achilles tendonitis refers to the inflammation of the tendon, often resulting from sudden increases in activity levels or intensity. If left untreated, this inflammation can progress to Achilles tendonosis, a degenerative condition characterized by the breakdown of tendon fibers and the development of microscopic tears.
Athletes, especially runners and jumpers, are at heightened risk for these disorders due to the repetitive strain placed on the tendon. Individuals with overpronation, where the foot rolls inward excessively while walking or running, may also be predisposed, as this gait pattern increases stress on the Achilles tendon. Wearing improper footwear that lacks adequate support can exacerbate this risk.
From Symptoms to Solutions: Treating and Preventing Achilles Tendon Disorders
Symptoms typically include pain, stiffness, and tenderness along the tendon, often worsening during physical activity and improving with rest. Swelling and warmth over the affected area may also be present. In severe cases, untreated tendonitis can lead to tendon rupture, a condition marked by a sudden, sharp pain and an inability to bear weight on the affected foot.
